This page contains adjectives that can be used in everyday conversation
with
JSL users. While they in no way run the gambit of signs needed for conversation, they will provide you with some useful words that can be used in a variety of situations.
(Please note that your facial expressions are very important to convey
meaning.)

1. Difficult (難しい−むずかしい)
Pinch the right cheek with the right index finger and thumb and twist the pinched cheek counterclockwise just a little.
Note: Just as in Japanese Spoken Language, Muzukashii (難しい−むずかしい) has more meanings than just difficult. It can also be used to say that something cannot be done or is impossible. |

2. Easy (簡単な−かんたんな)
Extend the index finger from the fisted right hand and place its tip on the cleft of the chin. Then, place it in the open left palm that is held palm up, blade edge toward you in front of the stomach. |

3. New (新しい−あたらしい)
Hold both hands palms up in front of the chest and touch the tips of the
fingers to the tips of the thumbs then quickly flick the fingers open so
that the fingers are splayed. |

4. Old (古い−ふるい)
The right index finger is placed in front of the nose and slides up it,
stopping on the upper part of the nose and rubbing it to complete the sign. |

5. Convenient (便利な−べんりな)
The web of the open right hand, palm toward you, is placed under the chin
and moves right to left a few times. |

6. Inconvenient (不便な−ふべんな)
The open right hand, thumb up and palm toward you, drops quickly from the
chin, ending in front of the throat. |

7. Same (同じ−おなじ)
The fisted hands are held palm up, in front of the sides of the chest.
The tips of the index fingers and thumbs are touched together twice ending
together. |

8. Different (違った−ちがった)
The right hand is held in front of the right shoulder, fisted with the
index finger and thumb extended. It is alternately twisted clockwise and
counterclockwise a few times. |

9. Skillful (上手な−じょうずな)
The open left hand is held out palm down in front of the left hip with
the fingertips pointing toward the interlocutor. The open right hand is
placed palm down on the left forearm just a little below the elbow. The
right hand then runs down the arm, smoothing the hair of the arm and stopping
at the left hand. |

10. Unskillful (下手な−へたな)
The open left hand is held out palm down in front of the left hip with
the fingertips pointing toward the interlocutor. The right hand is ran
up the left arm palm down, bristling the hair on the arm and stopping at
the elbow. |

11. Busy (忙しい−いそがしい)
Place the hands palms up in front of the stomach and move them up and down alternately in front of you. |

12. Free (暇な−ひまな)
Place your open hands palms toward you in front of your stomach and then
open the arms out to the sides of you so the palms can be seen and visibly
relax your posture and facial expression as if kicking back and relaxing. |

13. Delicious (美味しい−おいしい)
Place the open right hand palm up under the left side of the jaw and move
it to the right as if wiping drool off your chin. |

14. Disgusting (used when describing food)

The right palm is cupped around the chin and is dropped quickly ending in front of the center of the chest. |
